Mindfulness Initiative Launches...

Dear Supporter,

It’s been an exciting few months since the launch of the Mindfulness All Party Parliamentary Group (MAPPG) on May 7th. The most important development has been the emergence of the Mindfulness Initiative which will support the MAPPG and provide the secretariat - research and writing - for its work.

The Mindfulness Initiative represents a collaboration of the four universities leading on mindfulness research and training: Oxford, Bangor, Exeter and Sussex. Madeleine Bunting (a writer and journalist) and Ed Halliwell (mindfulness teacher and author) are co directing the Initiative supported by a team of 15 Associates drawn from academia, corporate communications, publishing, education and policy development.

Jon Kabat Zinn and Ruby Wax have agreed to be patrons. Professor Mark Williams has joined our advisory panel.

The MAPPG’s inquiry into the role of mindfulness in four key areas – health, education, criminal justice and workplace – is now well under way. There have been two hearings in parliament (May 20th on the workplace and July 16th on mental health). The inquiry will result in a report, Mindful Nation UK, which will be published in March 2015 ahead of the general election.

Events are already scheduled for the autumn with a hearing on mindfulness in the criminal justice system on October 21st and a hearing on mindfulness and pain on November 5th. Invitations will go out nearer the time.
We are due to launch the Mindfulness Initiative website in early September until then we have a twitter account @MindfulNationUK. Please follow us!

We have been delighted by the enthusiasm and commitment from many quarters. Thanks to the dedicated chairs of the All Party Parliamentary Group, Chris Ruane MP, Tracey Crouch MP and Lorely Birt MP.

If you know of anyone who would be interested in following our work please forward this email to them.

We look forward to seeing you at some of the hearings planned in the autumn and thank you for your support.
